Client Profile
Lorraine Johnston, Sonsie

Lorraine Johnston recently returned to the area from Victoria, BC. Unable to find fulltime employment she focused instead on an entrepreneurial career using the skills acquired while working in her mum’s kilt shop on Vancouver Island and the services of the Self Employment Program (SEP).

Lorraine started her business in May 2015 and since she is Scottish named her company Sonsie, which means pleasantly or attractively plump. Sonsie is a retail clothing and accessory store focusing on the needs of plus-sized women. Sonsie is located in downtown Trail at 1170C Cedar Avenue and carries a wide variety of clothing and accessory options not available anywhere else in the area with an emphasis on responsible clothing choices for women. Additionally, Sonsie takes consignment for specific articles such as classic business wear, vintage and formal garments. Other services offered include free hemming, for clothing purchased at the store, and alterations. You can find Sonsie on Facebook.

Lorraine has this to say about the Self Employment Program “Though I already had a background in retail and customer service, the SEP gave me the extra tools I required to move forward. The information and support provided by the staff have been, and continue to be excellent! ”
