Monika Smutny dreamed of creating her own career in tourism. With a strong background in marketing, administration and hospitality, she set out on the self-employment path to create a unique destination experience with Mountain Cottage Getaway.
The Mountain Cottage Getaway is located in a peaceful remote rural setting overlooking the Silvery Slocan and Valhalla ranges, surrounded by stunning mountain views and access to adventure galore out the doorstep. The upscale cabin is tastefully updated with beautiful local wood accents, warm cozy colours and lots of airy space. There is plenty of room with 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a loft den, covered shaded porch, sunny deck, new linens, furniture and comfy mattresses. The Cottage is equipped with everything for a maximum of 10 people plus space to camp if there are extra guests! WiFi, Office space, TV & DVD player, Stereo, Games & Books, BBQ in season on the deck, Outdoor firepit / rustic sauna & picnic area. It’s all located on two acres for guests to explore on Red Mountain Road above Silverton. In-season visitors can help themselves to culinary herbs, teas, greens and berries from the garden. Children are welcome to play in Mountain Cottage Getaway’s park-like setting amongst old growth trees, play area and treehouses. Located within 5-10 min. drive to Villages of Silverton & New Denver, Slocan lake beaches, cafes, markets, museums, shopping and more. This destination is pet and children friendly, open year round.
Monica had this to say about her participation in the Self Employment Program (SEP): “The Program has helped me immensely and increased my confidence as a new business owner. It was a natural step for me as I was seeking a way to balance the various intricacies of property ownership and providing income for family and myself. I have learned so many new skills from writing the business plan, market research, bookkeeping and the importance of networking. I love meeting new people from around the globe, so the challenge to reach out to the world and bring them to the Mountain Cottage Getaway, has been a reachable goal with the help of the SEP. The program has helped me stay focused in moving forward with this business and the feedback has been very positive since its official opening this spring! Without the financial assistance, mentorship and workshops, I would not be where I am today with the Mountain Cottage Getaway. I am excited to move forward and very thankful in this opportunity to participate. It’s a once in a lifetime chance to see your ideas come to life and very rewarding to see your own hard work flourish as a business owner.”
