One Tree Adventures

Holly Borwick and Emily Kogan-Young

The One Tree dream began around a kitchen table in February of 2015- four friends hashing out ideas on how to inspire children to get outside and be curious about the world around them. We were concerned about an increased time spent in front of screens that we had been noticing kids of all ages, and we shared a common value that connection with the natural world is an important and essential part of growing up. For two years, we ran programming through the City of Rossland, mostly aimed at 3-5 year olds. At the time, we called ourselves the Nature Detectives, which has since become the name of our pre-school aged programs. After our stint with the City, we decided to start our own business, and One Tree Adventures was born.

One Tree Adventures is an outdoor experiential learning company for children aged 0 to 12 based in the West Kootenays. It is collectively owned and directed by Holly Borwick and Emily Kogan-Young, who have been working together for numerous years in the outdoor education realm. One Tree specializes in creating unique, customized programming to fit the needs of each group, harnessing the power of the outdoor world to create meaningful experiences that empower and inspire participants. Ultimately, we aim to create an environment that fosters self development, self awareness and builds character.

“Though we had experience in outdoor education, our business and marketing experience was lacking. The self-employment program was an extremely useful resource in gaining the skills and knowledge required to get our business up and running. The mentorship available through the Self-Employment Program makes the incredibly daunting task of starting up a business streamlined and accessible.”
